What People Really Want from a Coach

I’ve been a coach and leader for many years now. What I have noticed over the years is that when people approach me to coach them, broadly they say want …

Confidence.

A new role.

A stronger voice.

Balance.

Answers.

Advice.

And all of those things matter.

But!!

Whenever I dig a little deeper (beneath the surface-level goals) I’ll always find something else.

What people are really looking for is a trusted partner.

A partner and a space to communicate … that’s quiet but not passive, supportive but not soft, stretching but never unsafe.

They want:

  • To be guided to clarity when their thinking feels tangled

  • Compassion when they’re being hard on themselves

  • To be challenged when they’re stuck in patterns

  • Accountability when it’s time to act

But most of all?

They want to feel seen. Heard. Supported. Stretched.

Great coaches don’t give answers or advice.

They hold space so people can find their own way.

The most valuable gift we offer isn’t direction.

It’s attention.

Remember, the path to extraordinary is walked with a thousand small steps, you’re doing great!
